Is Emule Illegal ? Not at all !

Quick notes you need to know.

P2P (peer to peer) softwares, such as Emule, are not illegal. They permit the sharing and downloading of files you have in your computer.

Many people still use Emule to download illegal contents, and each days many get arrested.

But P2P can give access to old files gone in public domain, to user's files like mine (images, mp3, videos) and to many other interesting stuff.

You can download any amount of data, you are just limited by the available disk space on your hard drives.
The speed of download is determined by the upload speed limit you set, and by your rank.

Your rank is determined by the amount of data you send. The higher your rank will be, the faster you'll progress into queues.

Sharing latest commercial musics and films are not a good idea. They may boost your rank but may put you on a cyber police black list.

I wrote a lot of electro mp3 (see undertraxx on the left menu), drew images, took photos and created videos I all share on P2P and Torrent systems.
All are my full property and I allow any user to download and keep my files to be shared again.
That way, you can make credits and get higher rank with legal files.
I upload each day about 700mb of my files on Emule, and I can sleep well.
To get my files, just type "onickz", without quotes, in the search box of your software, then select some and download them.

A P2P software automatically share what you download.
A P2P software often asks you to choose for three directories.

1/Where your temporary files will be put

2/Where your completed files will be moved.

3/Which directory you want to share to world.
Be Very carefull on this one. Only select one or more directories that you are sure of their content.
I wrote an article for a famous french security related newspaper ( www.zataz.com ) about this problem.
In brief, I recall that many people choose to install famous p2p softs like Kazaa, Shareazaa, Lamaaza (hem).
Those poor softwares ask you at first start if you want them to check for files to share.
Many people click Yes Thank You and get the photos contained in "my pictures" shared to world, or other critical and private data. Always choose manually the directories you accept to share, please.

I recommend you create an other directory than Temp and Completed, where you'll move the files you downloaded but you don't want to share.
For example, you bought the last N.E.R.D. album and want a track as Mp3 to burn on your compilation.
P2p softwares will allow you to download it. And that's good when you don't want to loose time to rip your CD, create a Mp3 etc etc.)
As it is Illegal to share this downloaded Mp3 because you can share it to people that never bought the original music, you may want to move to this new directory you can rename to something like "Finished No Share".

Emule is the p2p software of my choice, because it's simple to use, does not consume memory and system ressources like Shareaza do, it's french, it's free and served without adwares.

You can download the last emule version here : http://prdownloads.sf.net/emule/ (get the most recent eMuleX.XX-Installer.exe)

I wrote this page to make people understand that, even if gov want to make you uninstall those softwares, there is nothing illegal by nature. It's a wonderful way of sharing. Artists, join us and share !
