Rays of God.
Light over the Atlantic.

Sunlight breaks through a dark sky above the Côte des Basques. A photograph I made in Biarritz in May 2005, preserved here in its original colour presentation.

The photograph

A break in the clouds.

The image takes its title from the shafts of sunlight often called “god rays”. Here, the bright opening in the cloud cover and its reflection on the sea divide the scene between a dark sky and an illuminated horizon.

Biarritz’s Côte des Basques is the setting: the Atlantic fills the foreground, with the shoreline and small figures near the bottom of the frame.

A personal recollection

An unexpected life on the web.

“I remember this photograph appearing first when searching for ‘God’ on Google.com and Google.fr, for more than five years.”

— Guillaume Louyot

This is my recollection of the photograph’s early visibility online. This page keeps that history alongside the original image, while introducing its black-and-white print edition.
