About

About Guillaume Louyot

Photographer and filmmaker based in Paris.

My photography sits somewhere between observation and cinema.

I am drawn to places just before or after something happens, to people who momentarily stop performing for the camera, and to the small shifts in light, weather or gesture that can transform an ordinary scene.

Paris is a recurring territory in my work, particularly at night, at dawn, under changing weather or in parts of the city where traces of different eras coexist. I also photograph while travelling, working on assignments, following cultural events or simply encountering situations that deserve a frame.

From moving images to still photography

My background is in filmmaking, cinematography, editing and post production.

For more than twenty five years I have worked with moving images across cinema, television, documentary and editorial projects. That experience inevitably shapes the photographs I make.

Editing teaches you that an image gains meaning from what happens immediately before and after it. Photography asks the opposite question: which single fraction of that sequence is enough?

That tension between movement and stillness is central to my work.

I am interested in atmosphere, but not decoration for its own sake. In composition, but not perfection. In people, without forcing them into a pose. And in images that retain some ambiguity rather than explaining everything at first glance.

People, places, traces

The work moves across several recurring subjects: urban landscapes, Paris after dark, portraits and bodies, travel, architecture, cultural life and documentary observation.

Some photographs begin as planned projects. Others come from walking, waiting, returning to the same place or noticing something that may only exist for a few seconds.

Whether working alone or on assignment, I try to keep the same principle: observe first, intervene only when necessary.

The camera should create access, not become the subject.

Published & exhibited

My photographs have been published, licensed and exhibited across international press, publishing, cultural institutions and public space.

Selected uses include New York Magazine, Die Zeit, La Repubblica, The Telegraph, Forbes, France 24, Slate and Washingtonian, alongside publications and projects by Gallimard, Encyclopædia Universalis, Oxford University Press and European institutions.

Editorial photography and footage are distributed internationally through Getty Images, covering subjects ranging from Parisian life and cultural events to architecture, public space and contemporary affairs.

Photography has also moved beyond the printed page. A series of 130 portraits produced for the 130th anniversary of the SCUF was exhibited in public space in Paris with the support of Canon France. Other portrait work has been created for JR’s Inside Out Project, including a large scale installation at École Rodier in Paris.

These commissions sit alongside my personal work rather than apart from it. Whether an image is made for a publication, an exhibition or independently, I approach it with the same concern for framing, atmosphere and the moment that makes the photograph worth keeping.

Prints & physical photographs

A photograph changes when it leaves a screen.

Selected images from my personal work are produced as signed, limited edition Fine Art prints in Paris. The editions are deliberately small, with attention given to paper, scale and the way each photograph behaves as a physical object.

The work continues

I do not see these photographs as a closed collection.

Cities change. People change. Some places disappear completely. Others become interesting precisely because they have survived.

Photography gives me a reason to keep looking.
